There are three main types of strawberries to choose from: June-bearing, Day-neutral and Alpine. Each has its own personality, so here’s a quick breakdown to help you decide what fits your garden.
June-Bearing
These classic strawberries produce one big, juicy crop in late spring to early summer—usually around June. They’re perfect if you like to make jam or preserves in one go and be done for the year. The plants are large and thrive best when planted directly in the ground.
Varieties: Cabot, Honeyoye, Earliglow
Day-Neutral
Want fresh strawberries all season long? Day-neutral plants give you a smaller crop in June, then keep going with more berries throughout summer and into fall. These compact plants are perfect for containers and smaller spaces—great for snacking right off the porch!
Varieties: Albion, Tribute,Sweet Kiss, Ruby Anne (red flowers)
Alpine
These dainty plants are the smallest of the bunch and produce tiny but flavorful berries all season. They do not produce runners. They're not super productive, so they’re more of a novelty or ornamental plant for many gardeners. But if you enjoy little bursts of flavor and don’t mind the small harvest, they’re a sweet treat.
Varieties: Yellow Wonder, Mignonette
