How do I plant a Mini Potato Tuber?

How to Plant Mini Potato Tubers (Whole, Uncut)

As soon as your soil is workable in early spring, you’re ready to plant.

  1. Dig a trench
Make a trench about 4–6 inches deep.

  2. Space the tubers
Place the mini potato tubers 12–18 inches apart (not deep—this is spacing along the row).
No cutting needed—plant the whole mini tuber.

  3. Initial covering
Cover the tubers with about 2 inches of soil, leaving the trench partially unfilled.

  4. Let them sprout
When the plants grow to about 6–8 inches tall, begin hilling.

  5. Hill the plants
Gently pull soil up around the stems, adding about 2 inches at a time.
Do not bury the top leaves—they need sunlight.

  6. Continue backfilling
Keep adding soil every time the plants grow another few inches until the trench is filled.

  7. Keep tubers covered
Continue hilling slightly as needed to keep developing potatoes covered.
This prevents greening and protects the tubers.

Simple tip:
Potatoes form along the buried stem, so that gradual hilling is what gives you a better harvest.
