How do I store Canna bulbs for the winter?

Canna bulbs are hardy in zones 8-11 and can be left in the ground in those zones.

If you live up north they will have to be dug up and stored for the winter.

  1. Cut the stalks back to the ground after they are blackened by the first frost.
  2. Dig about 12 inches from the plant to make sure you do not damage the rhizome and lift clump from the ground..
  3. Remove any foliage and shake off loose dirt and place  in a dark place with good air circulation for a few days
  4. After the rhizomes dry store  them upside down in peat moss, perlite or vermiculite for the winter.
